From Cinema Superstar to Political Force: How Vijay Built a New Political Force in Tamil Nadu

For more than three decades, Vijay was known primarily as one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars. His films created massive fan followings, his characters often stood up for ordinary people, and his public image gradually moved beyond entertainment.

Today, however, Vijay is no longer simply a film star.

His political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has emerged as a major force in Tamil Nadu politics. In the 2026 Assembly election, TVK won 108 of the 234 seats, making it the single largest party in the Assembly. The party did not initially have enough seats to form a government on its own, but support from allies eventually took it past the majority mark. Election Commission of India — Tamil Nadu Assembly Results 2026

That result did not happen overnight.

Vijay’s political rise was built over years through cinema, an enormous fan network, social activities, political controversies and, eventually, a formal political organization.

The bigger question is therefore not simply how Vijay won an election.

It is how an actor managed to convert decades of popularity into an organized political movement.

From a Film Family to the Big Screen

Vijay was born on June 22, 1974, into a family connected to the Tamil film industry. His father, S. A. Chandrasekhar, was a filmmaker, while his mother, Shoba Chandrasekhar, was a singer.

Vijay entered films at a young age and later moved into leading roles.

His first years as a lead actor were far from spectacular. His 1992 film Naalaiya Theerpu failed commercially and received criticism from sections of the media.

But Vijay continued working.

During the 1990s, films such as Poove Unakkaga helped him establish himself as a romantic and family-oriented actor. Over time, his screen image changed.

The soft romantic hero gradually became an action-oriented mass entertainer.

That transformation became one of the foundations of his later popularity.

How Vijay Became a Mass Hero

By the 2000s, Vijay had developed a distinct formula.

His films increasingly combined action, comedy, music, dance and emotional themes. Ghilli became one of the major successes that strengthened his position as a commercial star.

More importantly, many of his later films began addressing issues that ordinary audiences could relate to.

Corruption, education, healthcare, farmers, unemployment, women's empowerment and government accountability appeared repeatedly in different forms.

This did not automatically make Vijay a politician.

But it helped create a particular public image.

On screen, Vijay frequently played characters who challenged powerful people on behalf of ordinary citizens.

That image would later become extremely valuable when he entered real-world politics.

The Fan Clubs Were More Important Than They Looked

A major advantage Vijay had over a newcomer to politics was his enormous fan network.

Over the years, his fan clubs were not limited to film promotions. They increasingly became involved in social activities, including blood donation drives, relief work and other community initiatives.

In 2009, Vijay's fan network was organized under the banner of Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (VMI).

This was a crucial development.

A normal film fan watches an actor's movie and moves on.

A politically useful organization, however, needs people who can organize meetings, communicate locally, mobilize crowds and maintain relationships with communities.

VMI gradually provided that structure.

This meant that when Vijay eventually entered politics, he was not starting completely from zero.

He already had a network.

The First Contact With Electoral Politics

VMI's political potential became increasingly visible over the following years.

In 2011, Vijay's fan organization supported the AIADMK-led alliance during the Tamil Nadu Assembly election.

At this stage, however, Vijay himself had not created a political party.

The organization was still primarily a fan and social network.

The distinction matters because Vijay's political entry did not happen in one dramatic announcement. It developed gradually.

His films became more political.

His public statements attracted increasing attention.

His fan organization became more structured.

And his supporters began participating in political activity.

Mersal Changed the Conversation

One of the most important political controversies surrounding Vijay came in 2017 with his film Mersal.

The movie contained dialogue criticizing aspects of GST and healthcare policy. BJP leaders objected to some of the content and demanded that the controversial portions be removed. Indian Express — Mersal and GST controversy

The controversy then became more personal.

BJP leader H. Raja publicly referred to Vijay by his full name, Joseph Vijay, and brought his religious identity into the political debate. He also published an image of Vijay's voter ID on social media. Indian Express — H. Raja's comments on Vijay

The episode was politically significant because Vijay was no longer being discussed simply as an actor.

He was increasingly being viewed through a political lens.

For many of his supporters, the controversy reinforced the image of Vijay as a celebrity willing to challenge powerful political forces.

However, it is important not to confuse political controversy with proof of a coordinated political campaign. Criticism from a political party and a celebrity's response do not, by themselves, establish a formal political alliance or conflict.

The 2020 Income Tax Raid

Another major episode came in February 2020, when the Income Tax Department questioned Vijay as part of searches connected to the Tamil film industry and financial transactions surrounding Bigil.

Contemporary reporting confirmed the questioning and searches. Indian Express — Vijay questioned by Income Tax officials

The incident quickly became part of the political conversation surrounding Vijay.

Some supporters interpreted the action as political targeting.

But that interpretation should not be presented as an established fact without evidence.

An Income Tax investigation is not, by itself, proof of political persecution.

Nevertheless, politically, the episode strengthened the perception among some Vijay supporters that their star was being targeted by powerful institutions.

That perception became another element in his growing political identity.

The Political Party That Vijay Did Not Approve

In 2020, Vijay's father, S. A. Chandrasekhar, attempted to register a political party using Vijay's name and his fan organization.

Vijay publicly distanced himself from the move and made it clear that he had not authorized the use of his name for such a political party.

Legal proceedings followed, and the proposed political organization was eventually dissolved. India Today — Vijay's father and the political party dispute

The episode demonstrated something important.

Vijay wanted to control his own political entry.

He was not prepared to let someone else define his political identity.

The 2021 Local Elections Provided the First Real Test

The next important development came during Tamil Nadu's local-body elections in 2021.

Candidates backed by Vijay's fan organization contested independently.

The results were striking.

According to contemporary reports, VMI-backed candidates won 115 of the 169 seats they contested. Hindustan Times — Vijay fans' local election performance

That translated into a success rate of roughly 68%.

More importantly, it demonstrated that Vijay's fan network could potentially do something far more important than fill cinema halls.

It could mobilize voters.

This was perhaps the clearest early warning that Vijay's popularity had an organizational dimension.

February 2024: Vijay Finally Enters Politics

On February 2, 2024, Vijay officially announced the formation of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, commonly known as TVK.

He made it clear that the party would focus on the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election rather than contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

This was the moment when the transition became official.

Vijay was no longer an actor with political opinions.

He was now the leader of a political party.

What Does TVK Stand For?

TVK has presented itself as a party focused on secularism, social justice and opposition to corruption.

The party has also emphasized the political ideas associated with figures such as B. R. Ambedkar, Periyar E. V. Ramasamy and K. Kamaraj. TVK — Official Ideology

Vijay has positioned his party as an alternative to the established political forces in Tamil Nadu.

This is significant because Tamil Nadu politics has traditionally been dominated by powerful Dravidian political organizations.

Entering that space with a new party was therefore an enormous challenge.

Vijay had popularity.

But popularity alone does not guarantee political success.

He needed votes, candidates, organization and a credible political structure.

The Karur Tragedy Became the Darkest Chapter

Vijay's political journey faced its most serious crisis in September 2025.

On September 27, a huge crowd gathered for a TVK political rally in Karur.

A crowd crush occurred, resulting in the deaths of 41 people, with many others injured. The Supreme Court's records also refer to the 41 deaths in connection with the incident. Supreme Court of India — Karur crowd-crush proceedings

The tragedy immediately raised questions about crowd management, event planning, security arrangements and political responsibility.

The Tamil Nadu government also initiated an inquiry into the incident. Tamil Nadu Government — Official notifications

This is an area where political claims need particular caution.

Different sides made allegations about what caused the disaster and who was responsible. Those allegations should not be treated as established facts unless supported by the findings of competent investigative or judicial authorities.

The tragedy remains one of the most serious challenges in Vijay's political career.

Why Did His Support Base Survive the Crisis?

That question is central to understanding Vijay's political strength.

A major tragedy at a political rally could have severely damaged a new party.

Yet TVK's organizational base did not simply disappear.

One reason may be the length of time Vijay had spent building relationships with his supporters.

His political network was not created a few weeks before the election.

It had evolved from fan clubs, social activities and local organizations over many years.

That long preparation gave the movement a degree of resilience that a newly created political organization might not have had.

Leaving Cinema Behind

Vijay's decision to move toward full-time politics represented another major turning point.

His film Jana Nayagan was presented as his final film, marking the end of a highly successful acting career. The film's audio launch in December 2025 became part of that transition. India Today — Jana Nayagan audio launch

Leaving cinema was a major gamble.

As a successful actor, Vijay had a relatively predictable source of income and enormous commercial value.

Politics offers none of those guarantees.

An actor can leave a disappointing film behind.

A political leader has to answer for policies, administration, employment, public services and governance.

That made his transition much more consequential.

The 2026 Election: Vijay's Biggest Test

The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election finally provided a measurable answer to the question of whether Vijay's popularity could be converted into political power.

The answer was yes.

According to the Election Commission, TVK won 108 of the 234 Assembly constituencies. DMK won 59, while AIADMK won 47. Election Commission of India — 2026 Tamil Nadu Results

The number is significant for two reasons.

First, TVK became the single largest party.

Second, the party fell just short of the 118 seats required for a simple majority on its own.

It therefore would be inaccurate to describe the 108-seat result itself as a standalone majority.

The subsequent support of allies became important in determining the final government formation.

A Symbolic Defeat for M. K. Stalin

One of the biggest surprises of the election came from Kolathur.

M. K. Stalin, the sitting Chief Minister and DMK leader, lost his constituency to TVK candidate V. S. Babu.

The Election Commission's constituency results show Babu receiving 82,997 votes against Stalin's 74,202—a margin of 8,795 votes. Election Commission of India — Kolathur Result 2026

The significance goes beyond one constituency.

Stalin had represented Kolathur for years, making the defeat a powerful symbol of TVK's breakthrough.

Still, it would be simplistic to attribute one constituency's result entirely to a statewide “Vijay wave.”

Candidate selection, local issues, vote distribution and broader anti-incumbency can all influence an individual constituency.

What Explains Vijay's Political Success?

Vijay's rise appears to have been built on several overlapping factors.

1. Three Decades of Celebrity Recognition

Very few political newcomers enter an election with the level of public recognition Vijay already possessed.

He had spent decades inside Tamil Nadu's popular culture.

2. A Ready-Made Grassroots Network

His fan clubs had already developed local structures before TVK was created.

The 2021 local elections demonstrated that these networks could participate in electoral politics.

3. Social Work

Blood donation, relief work and other community activities helped transform some fan clubs into local social organizations.

4. A Carefully Developed Public Image

Vijay's film characters often represented ordinary people fighting powerful institutions.

That image was highly compatible with an anti-establishment political message.

5. Demand for an Alternative

Tamil Nadu politics has long been dominated by established parties.

For younger voters and sections of the electorate looking for a new political option, Vijay offered something different: a recognizable public figure who was not part of the traditional political establishment.

The Hardest Part Comes After the Election

Winning an election is only the beginning.

The real test for Vijay is now governance.

Can TVK deliver on its promises?

Can it build a professional administration?

Can it manage the state's finances?

Can it create jobs?

Can it improve healthcare and education?

Can it maintain law and order?

Can it manage relations with the central government?

And perhaps most importantly, can TVK become an institution rather than remaining dependent on one enormously popular individual?

These questions will determine whether Vijay's political rise becomes a long-term transformation or simply another chapter in Tamil Nadu's history of celebrity-driven politics.

Conclusion: From Screen Hero to Real-World Political Leader

Vijay's journey into politics was not a sudden decision.

It developed over decades.

His films built his popularity. His fan clubs created an organizational base. Social activities strengthened local relationships. Political controversies gave his public image a sharper edge. The 2021 local elections demonstrated the electoral potential of his network. In 2024, he formally created TVK.

Then came the 2026 election.

Winning 108 Assembly seats transformed Vijay from a celebrity politician into a genuine political force.

But the most important chapter of his story has only just begun.

On screen, Vijay often played the hero who stood up for ordinary people.

In politics, there is no script, no retake and no background music.

The real measure of his legacy will therefore not be how many people cheer for him at a rally.

It will be whether his political movement can turn that extraordinary popularity into effective, accountable and sustainable governance.
